Bolt

What is 'Bolt'?

‘Bolt’ is an internal team of designers and researchers working on the re-imagination of the QuickBooks brand and product experience.

My Role

My role as part of the Bolt team, is to create design components that can be utilized by the development and design teams in international and emerging markets. I work with Senior Designer, Aaron Rantfl to design the components and report my progress to Principal Designer Tina Yuan. I work with design teams in Brazil, France, Australia, China and the UK by giving them the design specs and pressure testing for their respective markets. I then gather their feedback and results to modify my solution.

As a team we have defined Bolt as a visual language and understand how it it would color some of the everyday components that designers use everyday. To make this process easier for designers and developers who rely on built components, we started by listing out the components and applying the Bolt design language. And we do this, in a three step process.

1 Sketch

I start by sketching the component roughly to understand the anatomy of elements involved.

2 Design

All the bolt principles are applied and the component is designed. I then send it to design teams across the world to pressure test.

3 Spec

After multiple rounds of pressure testing and coordinated design exercises with international design teams, the component is spec'd out for the benefit of the developers. Designers use the component by dragging and dropping from Intuit’s Lingo library.

Learning

The ongoing exercise is an amazing learning experience in collaboration. I work with design teams from around the globe, understanding their needs and refining my solution based on their reactions and feedback. From accommodating for Portuguese words and phrases that sometimes exceed 35 characters to designing for emerging markets were just one product is sold, the thought that my designs would be used by designers and developers worldwide for the foreseeable future is exciting and scary at the same time. Having said that, it's a challenge I thoroughly enjoy.
